Reflecting Ahead
If you can't explain it to a six year old, then you don't understand it yourself.
Albert Einstein
History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes.
Mark Twain
I have been posting my writings on the web since 1995. I created and maintained an eldercare web site, ElderWeb.com, from 1995 until 2017. It was the first, and for a long time, only, source of long term care information on the Internet, and it won numerous early web awards and was frequently cited in national media in its early days.
These days I focus my writing on finance, healthcare, and economics, especially macroeconomics. I am particularly interested in looking to history to find clues about what might happen next.
My method for tackling complicated or difficult subjects is to do a deep dive into a topic, then try to explain it clearly, to be sure I understand it myself.
My Background
I have a dual background as a CPA and web architect and developer.
Currently I am the Chairperson of the Board & COO of Lullabot Inc, a 70-person digital agency focused on building digital experiences for large enterprise web sites. I have been there for 16 years, and I led or contributed to numerous high visibility projects like Martha Stewart, MSNBC, NYU Langone, Georgia.gov, and Georgia Public Broadcasting. I am especially proud that I was able to help shepherd the company from private ownership to becoming a 100% employee-owned company (ESOP).
Prior to Lullabot, I was CFO of a regional long term care provider for 10 years, and I directed all accounting and technology operations. I joined it in the early 1980's to computerize payroll, financial operations, and medical records, all of which were completely manual when I joined. My first big project included creating a system to transmit payroll data from timeclocks located in nursing homes all over the state to the central office via a dial up modem. At the time that was bleeding edge technology that we had to invent as we went!
Working on ElderWeb.com led me to Drupal.org, where I taught myself coding and web technology. I have been a member of Drupal.org since 2006. Over the years, I maintained numerous Drupal modules including the Content Construction Kit and the Date and Calendar modules for the Drupal Content Management system. Much of my work was later integrated into Drupal core as key functionality.
On the side, I have created and maintained various other web sites for myself, my family, and my friends (all decommissioned now), like:
